The BET Awards: Best International Act (Africa) Nominees

BET Nominees

BET have announced the categories and nominees for the 2014 BET Awards taking place on Sunday 29th June in Los Angeles and the nominations for the Best International Act (Africa) are as follows.

Sarkodie – Ghana

Tiwa Savage – Nigeria

Diamond Platnumz – Tanzania

Davido – Nigeria

Mafikizolo – South Africa

Toofan – Togo

I must say this is a pretty good selection as Davido, Sarkodie and Mafikizolo have all had a very very successful year.

Sarkodie who just scooped four awards at the Ghana Music Awards and an MTV MAMA Award nomination for Best Hip Hop Act may be trying to make this a double after he won the award jointly with WizKid back in 2012. After completing a successful American tour, bagging four MTV MAMA Award nominations and with mega hits “Skelewu” and “Aye” to name a few Davido has dominated the airways over the past year without the release of an album. South African duo Mafikizolo commanded everyone’s  attention last year with their smash “Khona” and have been on a roll ever since also bagging four MTV MAMA Award nominations.

Good Luck to all the nominees this year and I hope BET actually air who wins for the masses (the rest of the world) and to help raise awareness for Afrobeats on a mega scale.

P.S: I’ve got a little bone to pick. On the BET Best International Act (Africa) page (Here) it has Sarkodie down as and I quote “Made up of 13 super producers from Ghana” “With their dance heavy tracks” when in fact Sarkodie is a solo rapper. This just goes to show that someone over at BET has not done their research correctly. Considering the fact that Sarkodie has not only been nominated but has also won before  is very embarrassing on BET’s part. It also goes to show that African acts are still not respected in mainstream “Urban” (If you want to call it that) music at least not enough to research and write a correct profile. In fact all the profiles from each artist lacks Oomf as if someone just pulled names out of a hat and selected the acts, no thorough details on each act was discussed in their profile. If you are going to do such a category the least you can do is treat it with the same amount of respect you would treat others. If you have no clue about a genre there is no harm in contacting DJs, bloggers or even fans to really find out more info on the movers and the shakers of a genre.

I don’t mean to rant but I am a lover of Africa and our music, I do this for The love of Afrobeats (See what I did there? AyAy) and I think it’s about time our artists started getting the respect they truly deserve as some acts really work hard to put out the best they can. If they are going to be rewarded for this they should be treated with respect.

New Video: One – Cocoa Na Chocolate

19 recording artists. 11 countries. 10 languages. ONE message..  African Leaders: Do Agric, It Pays!

One.org is a project created to raise awareness and lead people to sign a petition in order to get African Leaders to invest and boost more money into African Agriculture. African farmers are responsible for feeding the continent however they are living in extreme poverty and can often lack the resources they need in order to thrive. Investing in agriculture pays and could see up to 85 million people out of poverty, provide more jobs and also boost the economy by 2024. 70% of African workers already earn a living from agriculture. Better irrigation, farming equipment, storage, market access, and women’s land rights could mean brighter futures for millions.

In 2003, African leaders pledged to invest more in agriculture – eight of them did, but 46 have not kept their promises. 2014 is the African Union Year of Agriculture, so let’s come together and tell them to act.

Let’s all come together to support our beloved Motherland!

The video was shot in South Africa and the participating artists on the track are: A.Y. (Tanzania), Bufallo Souljah (Zimbabwe), Dama Do Bling (Mozambique), D’Banj (Nigeria), Diamond (Tanzania), Dontom (Nigeria), Fally Ipupa (DRC), Femi Kuti (Nigeria), Judith Sephuma (South Africa), Juliani (Kenya), Kunle Ayo (Nigeria), Vusi Nova (South Africa), Liz Ogumbo (Kenya), Nancy G (Swaziland), Omawumi (Nigeria), Rachid Taha (Algeria), Tiken Jah Fakoly (Cote d’Ivoire), Victoria Kimani (Kenya) and Wax Dey (Cameroon).

“I’m going to assume the Ghana representative missed their flight on the day of recording… Just kidding”
