New Video: Juls Featuring Burna Boy – Gwarn

I’m not going to hit you with another “Why I love Juls” post because I’ve given you several throughout the year.. Instead I am just going to say that if there was an award for MVP in Afrobeats this year I would give it to him. CONSISTENCY and QUALITY!

We haven’t fully digested the visuals for After Six yet and here we are with another quality visual from Juls for his latest single Gwarn featuring Burna Boy. The hilarious animated video was created by long time collaborator Poka Arts

Check out the animation below.. I love it!

New Video: Juls Featuring Tomi Agape and Santi – After Six

Can somebody PLEASE call me a dentist because this chocolate is just too much to handle!

Listen.. You guys have heard me bang on and on about Juls over the year but honestly I won’t stop anytime soon. The man has the plan. The Vision. The Everything!

When I say Afrobeats has the power to crossover this is EXACTLY the type of formula I am talking about. Quality music followed up by beautiful visuals that capture the essence of Africa. These are the visions we need to start putting out. This is our norm. My heart is full.

Just the other day I was thinking about how some Afrobeats artists have started to follow the European standards route and start lightening up their models and here comes Juls once again with the chocolate (Which he has had throughout all his videos FYI).

Anyway, Juls finally releases the visuals for one of my personal favourite tracks on his Leap of Faith LP After Six featuring Santi & Tomi Agape and the video honestly does not disappoint. I want to give a massive shout out to Tshisz Nelson on the directing because everything from the lighting used to the beautiful melanated models just compliments the production and vocals of the track. I feel so warm on the inside. This is that Black Girl Magic baby!

Let me stop rambling.. Check the video out for yourself and let me know what you think.

New Music: Juls Featuring Burna Boy – Gwarn

Speaking on Juls..

If there was an award for Breakthrough Act hands down it would go to my favourite artist of the year Juls. The producer has been consistent throughout the whole year from his Leap of Faith LP and the visuals and his production credits on tracks including Rock Your Body with Burna Boy. Celebrating his successful AFRIMMA award for Producer of the Year and his MOBO nomination for Best African Act Juls continues with the release of his latest single Gwarn featuring Burna Boy.

This has already been getting the severe repeat treatment from me since it was released yesterday. There is just something about Juls and Burna boy that my ears appreciate so much. They work so well together!

Take a listen and let me know what you think..

New Video: Burna Boy – Rock Your Body

I’ve started to develop this very annoying habit of watching music videos but forgetting to post it on here. I’m sorry 😦

About 3 weeks ago Burna Boy released the visuals for his popular single Rock Your Body. Anyone who knows me personally will know that this is actually one of my favourite tracks of the whole year. I don’t know if its Juls on the production or the way Burna Boy delivers his flow over the track. Maybe it’s a combination of both. Whatever it is, I constantly have this song on repeat. When you sit in my car you are more than likely to hear this track at least three times with me screaming YA YA YA YA YAAA before we get to our destination. I love it so much !!

Anyway.. If you have not done so already check out the (creepy) visuals for Burna Boys single Rock Your Body produced by the one and only Juls.

P.S check out my next post on their latest single together.

The MOBO Awards: Best African Act and Why African artists should have more than one category

The MOBOs 2017 Best African Act Nominations are in!

Continuing on from last year I think 2017 has been another fairly successful year for Afrobeats commercially. We’ve seen the likes of Davido deliver two massive tracks with If and Fall, Wande Coal ride high off the success of last years Iskaba, Wizkid drop his major label debut (I want to write a post on how I really feel about SFTOS but I’m still in two minds about if I should post or not) release successful single Come Closer with Drake and become the first African artist to sell out the historical Royal Albert Hall. Mr Eazi became part of Apple Music’s Up Next campaign exposing new talent to the Mass Media and performing on The Late Show with James Corden and we received new bodies of work from Juls and Sarkodie to name a few.

With all that being said, the nominations for the MOBO Awards 2017 Best African Act have been announced and the top 10 are:

Davido

Mr Eazi

Juls

Wizkid

Wande Coal

Tiwa Savage

Maleek Berry

Eugy

Tekno

Sarkodie

I think I can agree with this list to some extent. I may have added Olamide, Burna Boy and Shatta Wale to the nominations as recognition however, I can totally understand this final selection. The votes are not open to the public this year and will instead be left to members of the best African Acts committee. The winner will be announced at the MOBO Awards on the 29th November at the First Direct Arena in Leeds U.K.

My personal opinion on this?

If we want to put it down to work rate this year.. I’m knocking it down to Davido, Sarkodie, Tekno, Juls, Maleek Berry & Mr Eazi. If we want to put it down to biggest hit in the past year.. That’s knocked down Wande Coal, Tekno, Maleek Berry, Davido, Mr Eazi and Wizkid. But if it comes down to what I expect to be which is a popularity showdown then it’s between WizKid & Davido. I would personally give it to Davido based on the two biggest Afrobeats tracks he’s released this year.

The thing about a best African act category is that it usually always comes down to who has the bigger fan base however the artist with a bigger fan base may not have had a big impact throughout that year if you get what I mean?. That’s why I always find these one off type of categories within black award shows (MOBOs and BET for example) kind of hazy. There’s no denying that Wizkid is the biggest artist out of the continent of Africa right now and although he has had a very successful year I wouldn’t say singles wise it was stronger than Davidos. I personally wouldn’t say Come Closer was a bigger track than If, FallIskaba or even Tekno’s Yawa (can be debated) however, as an international artist Wiz has a much larger fan base and could be seen as the bigger act overall.

I say all that to ask does this category come down to the act with the bigger fan base or the act that has released the best music over the span of the year? Maybe they should introduce a Best African Single category alongside these Best African Act categories. I think it’s only right that the biggest African single should be recognised as well as the best overall artist you get what I’m saying? Why is it called the Music Of Black Origin Awards if African acts only get one category in the mix?

Anyway, lets all tune in on the 29th of November and see who scoops the prestigious award and also see if any of our acts get the chance to perform this year 🙂

P.S We as consumers, bloggers and tastemakers of the scene have to keep pushing in order to get our music, artists and genre recognised. Afrobeats is still a very small drop in a mighty ocean.

New Video: Juls Ft. Sona & Odunsi The Engine – My Wave

If I haven’t said it already on here Juls is one of my favourite acts of the year so far. From his EP, to the visuals he has released alongside each single. He can do no wrong in my eyes. Check out the latest video for My Wave off his Leap of Faith EP that came out earlier this year.  The video was shot by UAimages and the animation was created once again by Poka.

Enjoy!

Yes to all the chocolate in this video! I have a toothache

New Video: Juls Ft. Maleek Berry & Nonso Amadi – Early

Honestly, Juls can do no wrong in my eyes (or should I say ears?)

Juls delivers the video for Early one of my favourite tracks on his Leap of Faith LP. The single features Maleek Berry & Canadian singer Nonso Amadi and the video was directed by Tshisz Nelson.

New Video: Juls Ft Not3s, Kojo Funds & Eugy – Bad

Ok so Londoners we really have to come up with a genre name for this Afrobeats/Bashment/UK sounding thing we currently have going on. You know what I am talking about, music from the likes of J Hus, Abracadabra, Kojo Funds, Lotto Boyz etc. It’s a like a weird fusion between all three genres that works amazingly well! But we need to figure out a title because it’s hard to categorise it.. But hey, do we really have to categorise it? If it’s vibes, then I guess it’s just vibes man! If you know.. You know!

DJ/Producer Juls has kicked off his 2017 with new single Bad featuring Not3s, Kojo Fund and Eugy. The video was shot here in London and was directed by Mira Jibari.

Check it out..

I’m at a point where I’m like “Can I post these tracks? Has it technically got an element of Afrobeats or am I reaching? Is there a line and can I cross it?” What to do ay?

New Music: Juls Ft L.A.X – Give You Love

give-you-love

You guys already know how much I am here for anything Juls or Mr Eazi related.. I have had this on repeat for over a week..

There is no denying that 2016 has been Juls’s year not only with Mr Eazi but also solo as a credible producer in his own right. With hits including Teef Teef and With You and with the year coming to an end he gives us one more entitled Give You Love featuring Mr L.A.X. There is no denying that this will go down at all the 2017 weddings.

Listen.. I am not going to tell you once more.. Do not sleep on this guy.. He is about to be a problem.

Feast your ears on this.. The saxaphone? Yaasss
