My 2014 Top Ten Wrap Up

Top 10 Wrap Up

Ok… So this post was meant to go up on the 31st December however the last 3 weeks have sort of merged for me and time has just past me by as I have been super busy (Forgive me!). Anyway! Here is my official Top Ten biggest singles of 2014. 2014 was an interesting year, we had albums from the likes of Fuse ODG, Wizkid, Yemi Alade and Sean Tizzle to name a few. We saw a prominent presence across the scene from South African collective Uhuru, the rise of popular dance the Shoki and we had (and still have) a missing case on our hands with Ghanaian star Castro disappearing whilst jet skiing in Ada, Ghana. In the midst of all of that 2014 was a good year full of plenty of music so you can imagine how difficult it was for me to select ten of my favourite tracks but I got there in the end.. So without further ado and in no particular order here is my top 10 wrap up of 2014!

1. LeriQ featuring Burna Boy, Dammy Krane, Mojeed & Ozone – Comment Tu Ta’appelle

Aristokrat Records producer Leriq released Comment Tu Ta’appelle of his anticipated album The Lost Sounds right at the top of 2014. The video was later released in May and was directed by Clarence Peters. Burna Boy killed his verse! (P.s did the album ever come out?  I never really heard anything about it after a while).

2. Castro featuring D-Black – Seihor

Castro, Castro, Castro.. WHERE IS CASTRO?  There is no doubt about it.. Castro was on a roll in 2014 before his untimely disappearance in August 2014. The video for Seihor was released in May and was directed by Kwame B. Ohene. This song still goes down in the clubs! (Would you be creeped out if Castro was to return from wherever he disappeared to? I sure know I would!)

3. Yemi Alade – Johnny

So I’ve been told that this single was actually released at the end of 2013 however it didn’t actually blow up (well here in the UK) until May 2014 or so. The chocolate Barbie Yemi Alade had one of the hottest tracks of the year with catchy single Johnny the video was released in March 2014.

4. Mavins ( Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, D-Prince, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello & DIJA ) – Dorobucci

There’s no doubt about it.. The Mavin team were the strongest collective in 2014, I’m pretty sure there was a new single from a Mavin member every month or so. Don Jazzy introduced his three new additions to the Supreme Mavin Dynasty on the catchy smash hit Dorobucci, the single was released in May with the video following in July directed by Nic Roux and shot on location in South Africa.

5. Uhuru featuring Dj Buckz, Oskido, Uri-Da Cunha & Professor – Y-Tjukutja

This is also another 2013 sneaky one that blew up in 2014! South African group Uhuru hit the jackpot with hit Y-Tjukutja the video was released in November 2013. The single which was a remix of Angolan hit Atchu Tchutcha blew up and netted the artists an MTV Africa award for Best African Collaboration (Not forgetting their amazing performance at the MTV Africa Awards).

6. Fally Ipupa – Original

There are no words to describe how much I actually love this song! Congolese superstar Fally Ipupa released his single Original back in May with the video following shortly afterwards. You have to hand it to em Congolese men are the best when it comes to intricate waist movement.. I Love this video!

7. Kesh featuring Davido & Olamide – Shoki (Remix)

Nigeria served up this years dance craze with Lil Kesh’s popular single Shoki. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have just about seen the Shoki in almost every fast Nigerian song that came out this year. The track even got banned from by the Nigerian music association at one point as there was some mix up behind what the actual term Shoki meant. The original video came out in April with the popular remix video being released in July.

8. Kwamz & Flava – Wu Onane No

UK Afrobeats duo Kwamz & Flava had the summer in their hands with smash hit Wu Onane No (which means lift your leg up). The single was released back in July and the video directed by Pressplay Vidz was released in October.

9. Davido – Aye

Now.. This song came out so early on in the year (February) that I actually thought it came out late 2013 and that’s only because Davido released and featured on so many tracks that it was hard to keep up! Aye was one  of the most played tracks of the year from weddings to parties on radio and in the clubs it was playing! Davido hands down wins the title of the hardest working artist of 2014 so it was only right that we won several awards including an MTV Africa award for Best Male & Artist of the year and a best international act award at BET awards to name a few. With Davido’s highly anticipated new album due to be released in the first half of 2015 I am excited to see what else the HKN Gang leader has in store. The video was directed by Mr Clarence Peters.

10. Sarkodie featuring Castro – Adonai

Even through this selection is in no particular order I saved my personal favourite track of the whole year until last. Africa’s best rapper Sarkodie had one of the biggest tracks of the year with Adonai the severely missed Castro. The single was released at the top of the year (February) and managed to maintain itself throughout the whole of 2014. The video was released in June, directed by Nana Kofi Asihene and shot on location in South Africa. Still love this song (along side Sarkodie & Bisa Kdei’s – Chingam).

So that’s it! That’s my top ten tracks of 2014! Do you agree? What tracks would have made your top ten? Let me know!

Now! Let’s bring out the 2015 goods!

New Video: Fally Ipupa – Original

I have zero knowledge on artists of the Francophone region unfortunately. However I think that may be my new music research project after I thoroughly finish with South Africa (I am not fully finished yet).

Someone I do have a little bit of knowledge on is Mr Fally Ipupa and he is back his new single “Original”.

You know how the Congolese get down! Check it out for plenty of waist movement..

New Video: One – Cocoa Na Chocolate

19 recording artists. 11 countries. 10 languages. ONE message..  African Leaders: Do Agric, It Pays!

One.org is a project created to raise awareness and lead people to sign a petition in order to get African Leaders to invest and boost more money into African Agriculture. African farmers are responsible for feeding the continent however they are living in extreme poverty and can often lack the resources they need in order to thrive. Investing in agriculture pays and could see up to 85 million people out of poverty, provide more jobs and also boost the economy by 2024. 70% of African workers already earn a living from agriculture. Better irrigation, farming equipment, storage, market access, and women’s land rights could mean brighter futures for millions.

In 2003, African leaders pledged to invest more in agriculture – eight of them did, but 46 have not kept their promises. 2014 is the African Union Year of Agriculture, so let’s come together and tell them to act.

Let’s all come together to support our beloved Motherland!

The video was shot in South Africa and the participating artists on the track are: A.Y. (Tanzania), Bufallo Souljah (Zimbabwe), Dama Do Bling (Mozambique), D’Banj (Nigeria), Diamond (Tanzania), Dontom (Nigeria), Fally Ipupa (DRC), Femi Kuti (Nigeria), Judith Sephuma (South Africa), Juliani (Kenya), Kunle Ayo (Nigeria), Vusi Nova (South Africa), Liz Ogumbo (Kenya), Nancy G (Swaziland), Omawumi (Nigeria), Rachid Taha (Algeria), Tiken Jah Fakoly (Cote d’Ivoire), Victoria Kimani (Kenya) and Wax Dey (Cameroon).

“I’m going to assume the Ghana representative missed their flight on the day of recording… Just kidding”
