Throwback: Kelly Hansome – Maga Don Pay

kelly hansom

As the summer draws to a close my mind begins to shift to the next big season on the calendar.. Christmas and the New Year!! And with that being said.. All the ideas of travelling back home to Ghana to party and enjoy scorching temperatures and beach trips come to mind. As I sat here and pondered I was taken back to all the other times I went back home and what the big tracks of that year were.. So for the next couple of weeks I’m going to bring to you some of my favourite throwback singles, over the years that I have been back to Ghana..

So we are starting with Summer 2009! My first time going back to Ghana in over 13 years! I remember my cousin picking me and my sister up and taking us out. The first spot we entered was Rhapsody’s Accra Mall (Unfortunately now closed down I’ve heard:( ) and the song that ended up becoming the sound track to my five weeks in Ghana Kelly Hansom – Maga Don Pay (along side D’banj –   Suddenly, Wande Coal Bumpa to Bumpa and MNC – Igwe) was introduced to me. This song was killing the clubs! This was at a time when Nigerian Afrobeats was HOT, the Mo Hits dynasty were killing it pre Wizkid and Davido, D’Banj ran all of west Africa, Castro had gone on a little hiatus and Ghanaian music was beginning to shift from Hi-Life to more of the Afrobeats party sound. Every club, chop bar, drink spot, restaurant even market had this track bumping, you could not escape it. Now that I listen back to it I really clock on to the lyrics and what the track is talking about, similar to Olu Maintain’s Yahoozee but man the song went OFF in the GH clubs, everyone would throw their hands in the air, wave side to side and point fingers, I remember it crystal clear, as soon as you heard that “Ugly beats” intro it was bloody good times!

Anyway.. Enough of me reminiscing! This weeks throwback track is Kelly Hansome – Maga Don Pay.. Enjoy!

After this track I never heard from Kelly Hansome again.. What happened to him?

News: RIP Daasebre Gyamenah

This past weekend Ghanaian Hi-Life fans all around the world mourned the loss of the great Daasebre Gyamenah. A talented artist who contributed to the success of Hi-Life music that dominated Ghanaian hall parties all around the world from the 90s well into the 2000s and that still get played today as timeless classics. With hit songs that include Kokooko, Sherry and Still I Love You to name a few it is with sad hearts we say goodbye to this legend.

In honour of this.. This weeks throwback video will be to one of my favourite Hi-life tracks ever.. Daasebre Gyamenah ft Lord Kenya – Kokooko

P.S Where is Lord Kenya? The Ghanaian DMX! He had the BEST verses back in the day
P.P.S The video to this is hilarious! Thank you to the person who had it on video cassette and decided to upload it on Youtube. Nostalgia

Throwback: 2Face Idibia – African Queen

I have not done a throwback this whole year and we are in the 4th month! How terrible of me.. Apologies!

I can’t remember where exactly I heard this but I remember someone saying that 2Face’s African Queen is now over ten years old and I could not believe what I was hearing. Considering how much it still gets played today in weddings etc you tend to forget how long ago it was released. This is a real classic.

Hope you enjoy..

Throwback: Ofori Amponsah Featuring Kofi Nti, KK Fosu & Barosky – Otoolege

Seen as Joey B released his new single based on this Ghanaian Hi-Life classic it’s only right that this weeks throwback video is Otoolege. Produced by Appietus and featuring some of the greatest Hi-Life musicians Ofori Amponsah, KK Fosu, Kofi Nti and not forgetting that sick rap by Barosky Otoolege is one of Ghana’s all time Hi-Life classics and still goes down well wherever it is played. As for the video quality? Well we won’t talk about that, but that’s what throwback videos are all about.

Check it out…

Seen as Kofi Nti and KK Fosu both made a return to music is it possible to get my hopes up about Ofori? or is he too settled in his pastoral duties?

Throwback: Ofori Amponsah – Broken Heart

Ok, so you guys get two throwback videos this week!

After hearing that new Kofi Nti single something in the track reminded me of one of my favourite Hi-Life tracks so it is only right that I post it as my throwback. Check out the video for Ofori Amponsah’s hit song Broken Heart produced by Appietus.

As for the quality.. You guys know how Ghanaian videos were back in the day. We have come a long way lol!

Throwback: K.K Fosu – Number One

I love posting these old music videos.. The video quality is terrible but it shows how far African videos have come over time..

Before Afrobeats there was (and still is) the sweet sweet sound of Hi-Life music.

This weeks throwback goes to Ghanaian Hi-Life artist K.K Fosu with his hit Number One produced by Appietus.

One of my faves! Enjoy

Throwback: D’Banj – Tongolo

Heheehehehe this video and the quality is so hilarious..

With the news that D’banj and Don Jazzy have reunited on D’banj’s upcoming album it’s only right that this weeks throwback goes to the dynamic duo that once was.

Check out the video for one of D’banj’s first singles Tongolo produced by Don Jazzy..

I love seeing the growth in artists. Look at where D’banj and Don Jazzy started from. Now one has endorsements with Beats By Dre and the other heads up one of the best music labels in Africa. Started from the bottom..

Throwback: 5Five – Muje Baya

Ok, so I was listening back to last weeks UAB show with Dj Neptizzle and he played this track.. I almost fell off my office chair because back in December 2010 this song was KILLING the clubs in Ghana (Alongside Zigi-You say wetin) and it was my anthem for almost a solid year! This was when the Azonto was becoming popular but didn’t have the name Azonto.

Anyway.. Enjoy the video for 5Five – Muje Baya (Produced by Appieatus)

(I always say Davido got the Skelewu from this track)

Throwback: Freestyle On The Bus Featuring Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, Dadie Opanka & D-Cryme

Ok, so this throwback is different to the normal old school music videos I usually post however this is a real classic and it’s one of my favourites so I thought I would share it!

Checkout this footage from 2009 when a couple of the then”Tema boys boys” started freestyling on a bus (Destination unknown) recorded by King Mo Joe. I know this video almost word for word that’s how many times I watched it back in 2009. Back then no one knew that the likes of Dadie Opanka, D-Cryme, Yaa Pona and the one and only Sarkodie would  go on to churn out successful music careers. With Sarkodie being the only Ghanaian representative on MTV Base’s Africa’s Hottest Rappers list (He made number 6) it’s amazing to see where he started compared to where he is now.

Hope you enjoy this as much as I do, It’s hilarious!

P.s I love how Sarkodie still has the same Ad-libs!

Throwback: Davido Featuring Naeto C – Back When

Ok so this weeks throwback is not too far back but with Africa Unplugged coming up this weekend and all these features Davido has all over the place I thought it was only right that I took it back to one of the tracks where it all began.

Check out Davido Featuring Naeto C on “Back When”..
